Hammertoe Treatment in Ocala, FL

A hammertoe is a common foot deformity characterized by an abnormal bend in one or more of the smaller toes, causing them to resemble a hammer. This condition typically results from an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that normally keep toes straight. Hammertoes can lead to pain, swelling, and corns or calluses due to friction against footwear. Contributing factors include genetics, ill-fitting shoes, and foot trauma.

Treatment options can include:

  • Footwear Changes: Wear shoes with a roomy toe box to reduce pressure on the toes. Choose shoes with low heels or no heels to minimize stress on the toes. Avoid shoes with narrow or pointed toes that can exacerbate the deformity.
  • Toe Exercises and Stretching: Perform exercises and stretches to improve toe flexibility and strengthen the muscles that control toe movement. Toe exercises may include picking up small objects with your toes, rolling a towel with your toes, or using toe separators. Regular stretching of the toes can help maintain flexibility and prevent the toes from becoming rigidly bent.
  • Orthotic Devices: Shoe inserts or orthotic devices can provide support and help distribute pressure more evenly across the foot. Toe splints or cushions may be used to straighten and relieve pressure on the affected toes. Custom orthotics can be designed to address the specific needs of individuals with hammertoes.
